ゴッドファーザーのJuan Atkins(ホアン・アトキンスホアン・アトキンス)、Derrick May(デリック・メイデリック・メイ)とKevin Saunderson(ケビン・サンダーソンケビン・サンダーソン)そしてOmar S(オマーSオマーS)、Moodymann(ムーディーマンムーディーマン)、Jeff Mills(ジェフ・ミルズジェフ・ミルズ)やTheo Parrish(セオ・パリッシュセオ・パリッシュ)といったアーティストも私の音楽テイストに影響を与えた。

Could you please share a bit about your mix?
Melis: When I was asked to do the mix for block.fm, I wanted to showcase an almost lost side of Berlin’s nightclub scene: a peak time house music set with back-to-back groovy bangers. I visualized myself on a Sunday night at Panorama Bar when it was crowded and everyone around you was sweaty and excited. One moment you are on one side of the room, then all of a sudden the next second you are on the other side without realizing how you got there. Due to the pandemic, I haven’t DJed in front of an audience- which is my favorite part of being a DJ. Giving your best and getting a reaction from the audience and watching them dance until their feet fall off. Because that wasn’t possible I decided to do the mix when a few friends of mine were hanging out at my place and we had a little after-hour type of get-together. I started to DJ and went into it without planning anything. I just went with the flow. I had a lot of fun doing the mix. Though it wasn’t the ideal club atmosphere, just being with my friends while DJing brought me so much joy. I hope those feelings can transcend to anyone who’s listening to this mix.
ーCould you share a bit about some of the things that have influenced your taste in music?
Melis: I am of Kurdish descent called Zaza. My ancestors were the ancient Zoroastrians, but today my people have different names depending on which region they are from because Kurds don’t have an official country or nation that they can really call home. Never-ending war and genocide towards my people separated us as a whole and now Kurds live all around and depending on where they live the language and even the practice of religion might vary. My family is from Dersim, one of the largest areas in Turkey where Kurdish people live alongside other marginalized minorities. I was born in Izmir, a very beautiful and always prospering city on the coast side of Turkey across Greece. I immigrated to Germany when I was almost 4 years old. As a kid, I grew up in Kiel, a city north of Germany and right between the North Sea and Baltic Sea. Then I moved to the South of Germany, a town close to Heidelberg. At 17, I moved to Hamburg and two years later I decided to move to Berlin which would end up being the best decision of my life. Moving around has shaped me in many ways since my environment is always changing and the access to music and culture changes.
When I was still a kid, my father gifted me a tape recorder and a bunch of empty tapes- though I didn’t know how to record my own mixtapes. I have a bunch of musicians in my family. Generally, I’d say Kurdish people are very musical people and I grew up around a lot of Middle East, Southwest Asian, and North African music. I even learned to play Saz, a stringed musical instrument or what I call the middle eastern guitar.
Then there was MTV where my big brother and I would absorb the music and culture that was so new to us and identify with the parts we loved. I would listen to any type of music that was under the sun, hip-hop, R&B, soul, rock, pop, jazz, blues, and electronic. Anything as long it was banging. I’d buy tapes and CDs and eventually became a very nerdy vinyl collector. As a teenager, I taught myself the basics of the guitar and started going to live shows and festivals. And of course, there was YouTube. I think my generation and the generation before me understand, but everything changed for me because of it. I know I had almost unlimited access to music from all over the world and it didn’t matter if you were a superstar. That was such an exciting time for me. I studied a variety of genres and was introduced to so many things. It was like Pandora's Box just opened before me.
Later on, when I moved to Berlin, I started to work at OYE Record Store where I worked for more than 4 years. It was my dream as a kid to work at a record store. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world to be exposed to music all day and help customers to find the right tunes. I learned so much and loved being able to access new and old music. It was a dream come true and I will always cherish those years of my life of being a part of a beautiful community dedicated to their love for music.
ーWhen did you first get into DJing?
Melis: When I was living in Hamburg, I was very much into club music and going out a lot. A lot of my friends around me were DJs themselves and when we were hanging I’d tell them what they should play until they eventually told me to just try it myself. Luckily I did because I got the hang of it really quickly and after that it was history. It was like a new world of possibilities and purpose was presented to me. I think I must have been 19 years old at that time. Not even after a month of practicing, I played at the closing party of “Soul Kitchen”, a nightclub in Hamburg that was shutting down. A few days after I moved to Berlin and that's when I started to get more serious about DJing.
ーHow would you describe your DJ style to your new fans? And any artists you were influenced by?
Melis: It’s not really easy to answer this question in a satisfying way because I feel like I am a DJ who’s not bound to any genre or style, but you can always expect very high energy, sexy groove, and no limit when it comes to my DJing. Depending on where and what time it is, what I play can be different but I promise you, you will be dancing and sweating. I just love taking my audience on a trip into my world of music, whatever that is, and you will understand that I put a lot of love and intention into it. I do nothing without intention.
If I would start talking about all the artists that influenced me and about my love for them, I would probably have to write several chapters on it. I can tell you about my earliest connection to electronic music which was the 90s, 2000s hit house music, and artists like Daft Punk and Aphex Twin. At some point, I also got into French Electro like the label Ed Banger Records. I researched and studied the history of electronic dance music until I understood the full circle of it. The Belleville Three, The Godfathers: Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson are also huge inspirations. I was heavily influenced by the sound of Detroit and Chicago. DJs and producers like Omar S, Moodymann, Jeff Mills, Theo Parish, and more have definitely shaped my sound.
ーWhere would you take us to enjoy music if we were to visit you in your city?
Melis: I would start by taking you to some underground techno parties. One of my favorite parties is “MESS” and “Mala Junta”. My really good friend and DJ colleague Ana aka Hyperaktivist and her team of amazing like-minded friends and artists are responsible for what I’d say are one of Berlin's finest underground parties. Then depending on the time and the day, I would show you parties like “Floorgasm“ hosted by LSDXOXO, and other alternative parties in clubs like “Traumabar und Kino'' and so on. If it's summer, I would take you to some open airs parties around the city and as for the climax of it all, I would take you to Berghain. I couldn’t bear the idea of anyone who loves clubbing coming to Berlin and not going to Berghain. I’ve been to some of the best parties there and I will always be grateful for this place no matter what. If it wasn’t for Covid19 my sister and partner in crime and also DJ colleague Kikelomo and I were supposed to have our first party in Spring 2020. Our new baby is called “BRONZE” -keep that name in your mind because as soon the global pandemic is over, we will have something very special prepared for all of you.
ーWhat’s been your favorite gig so far?
Melis: This is a very tough one to answer because there are so many. But if I had to choose one of my earliest international shows it would be when I went to Switzerland and I was playing the closing set of an event. I think there were about 1000-2000 people throughout the whole night and I was supposed to play until 7 am but ended up playing until 11 am and my flight was taking off around 1 pm. The crowd wouldn’t let me finish my mix. Every time I tried to wrap it up they would scream and shout for encores. I was so overwhelmed that I decided to continue until I almost missed my flight back home.
ーWhat has been your biggest accomplishment as an artist so far?
Melis: It might sound corny but I feel accomplished from just doing what I love and getting acknowledged for it. Growing up I had no idea that being an artist was an option for someone with my background and responsibilities. I learned to love and be proud of myself and what I’ve achieved as an immigrant of a marginalized community. I was able to showcase my talent around the world, travel, play in many regional clubs and parties, have my own radio shows, and collaborate with big brands. Even though there is still so much to accomplish, I get my drive to continue from the people who enjoy what I do.
ーWhat are you looking forward to most after covid ends?
I get teary eyes just thinking about it. I can’t wait to DJ and travel around the globe, and to DJ in front of large crowds without a mask. It is so surreal to think about it as just distance memory. It was such a privilege and normality in our lives. I’m looking forward to when the fear of concern disappears and people can gather again and hug, touch, and kiss. I just know when Covid19 ends the parties are going down into history. People in the future will talk about it as a historical event.
